Commissioner Rosenworcel commemorates 50 years since the first 9-1-1 call
FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel commemorated the 50th anniversary of the first 9-1-1 call in a Valentine’s Day speech at the 9-1-1 Awards. She recounted the history of the emergency service, which began in Hayleyville, Alabama, honored 9-1-1 operators as life-saving first responders, and condemned the lack of funding to support emergency communications in President Trump’s national infrastructure proposal. “Updating 9-1-1 is a big job,” she said. “It’s a shame that funds for next generation 9-1-1 are absent in the most recent national infrastructure proposal. Because the way I see it, there is no more essential infrastructure for our day-to-day safety.”
