Dallas soon getting AT&T GigaPower
Last week, AT&T announced that it would begin building out GigaPower in the larger city of Dallas. AT&T CEO and Chairman Randall Stephenson told a media conference, “We are directing VIP investments to fiber-to-the-home deployment and, in fact, we are going to launch the service in Dallas this summer.” AT&T headquarters is based in Dallas, a city which sits in the center of a metro are with seven million people.
VIP is Project Velocity IP, a three-year capital investment. One of the goals of VIP is to build out 8 million additional U-verse subscriber locations nationwide.
The company is expanding its 1 Gig network with the same strategy that Google is using: by asking residents of a metro area to vote at a website whether they would pay for the additional bandwidth of a fiber network. Those neighborhoods with the most responses get the first hookups.
AT&T's Dallas fiber deployment comes on the heel's of similar network investment in Austin. Last month, Speed Matters reported that AT&T planned to double the number of Austin, Texas households reached by its fiber network, U-verse with GigaPower.
