FCC speed test for iPhone announced

As the latest step in its Measuring Broadband America program the FCC is releasing the FCC Speed Test app for iOS devices. Chairman Tom Wheeler made the announcement at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Washington.

Last fall, the FCC released a speed test for Android smartphones. The iOS speed test is now available in the iTunes App Store.

Measuring Broadband America is, according to the FCC, “An ongoing nationwide performance study of broadband service in the United States, the Measuring Broadband America program developed out of a recommendation by the National Broadband Plan to improve the availability of information for consumers about their broadband service.”

The program collects broadband speed information from a scientific sample of consumers which it then compiles and reports on every year.

For many years prior to the FCC program, Speed Matters offered to send folks to the CWA speed test on our Speed Matters website. At last, the FCC has seen the value in an impartial and accurate speed test for consumers. But for landline broadband, continue to use Speed Matters.
