Net Neutrality Jumps Yet Another Hurdle

On July 7, 2011 the Federal Communications Commission submitted its net neutrality regulations to the Office of Management and Budget for review. According to the Digital Trends website:

"The OMB will make the regulations available for comment for 30 days and, if after the 30 day period the OMB issues an approval, the FCC's net neutrality framework will go into effect 60 days later."

But, in practice, this is only another step in what has become a very protracted battle. Industry observers expect that Verizon plans to immediately challenge the new regulations in court, claiming, as they did in January, 2011, that the FCC has no authority to regulate traffic on their network.

In addition, House Republicans continue to attempt to block the FCC from enforcing the new rule by cutting the commission's appropriations.

CWA supports the FCC's net neutrality rules that protect an open Internet while encouraging job-creating investment to upgrade our nation's broadband networks.
