Nielson: US population spends 10.5 hours a day on multimedia devices
The average American spends 10.5 hours every day consuming some sort of media, according to a recent Nielson study. Even more notable is how Americans are spending that time. Video viewership on tablets and smartphones has increased 63 percent and 60 percent, respectively in the past year (see the purple and red bars in the graph below).
Still, live TV and radio continue to dominate our media consumption, with Americans spending 4.5 hours per day watching TV (the blue bar) and almost 2 hours per day listening to the radio (the green bar). But the trends are clear: people -- especially young people -- are moving from traditional live television to mobile and other multimedia devices, computers, and game consoles.
