One Economy 10th Anniversary Highlights FCC Broadband Efforts

One Economy, a technology non-profit seeking to expand economic opportunity for Americans through increased Internet connectivity, and a Speed Matters partner, recently celebrated its 10th Anniversary.

The event, which took place at the Newseum in Washington, DC, not only brought attention to the positive benchmarks which One Economy has achieved, but also honored the work of the FCC Broadband team, led by Chairman Julius Genachowski, in creating and implementing the National Broadband Plan.

By partnering with One Economy to achieve many of their broadband aims, the FCC and Speed Matters have been able to tap into the expertise and success One Economy has had over the years. With a large network of partnerships, One Economy has brought computers and broadband to people who can't afford them, connected entire communities, and demonstrated how technology adoption can economically reinvigorate America.

The Anniversary provided Genachowski with the opportunity to outline key measures already achieved by the FCC to further the National Broadband Plan, and emphasize the need for continued action:

Whether it's finding a job or creating a job, whether it's education or health care, as One Economy has taught us: broadband is essential to meeting our common goals. People who don't have access to broadband are at an increasingly serious disadvantage. And our country is not where it needs to be. Broadband access is not where it needs to be. Digital skills and knowledge are not where they need to be. That's why One Economy's work is so important.
