Hundreds of Austin residents are complaining about Google Fiber's contractors

363 – that’s the number ofcomplaints made by Austin residents over Google Fiber’s construction in the area. Almost 70 percent of those complaints were in the last year.

While Google Fiber’s deployment has been called “slow and limited” by Bernstein Research, it may not be limited enough for some Austin, TX residents. Residents there have complained to their city’s 3-1-1 service that Google’s contractors have damaged homes and lawns, blocked driveways, and trespassed. There have been 363 3-1-1 complaints against Google since it began fiber deployment at the end of 2014. More than 250 of those complaints were made last year.

Google has recently explored the possibility of bringing fiber service to three new cities: Irvine, CA; Louisville, KY; and San Diego, CA. Should we expect similar complaints in those areas?

Google also announced that it’s bringing Fiber to Huntsville, Alabama. The City of Huntsville will invest in broadband infrastructure and then lease that infrastructure to Google Fiber.
