Progress in the New York Assembly
Great news out of New York this week. The Telecommunications Reform Act passed out of committee in the state Assembly by an 18-4 vote. That's a very strong margin of victory, and it shows that support for this important bill continues to grow.
The Telecommunications Reform Act goes a long way toward making New York a national leader in high speed internet access. Its provisions include promoting the deployment of high speed internet infrastructure throughout the state, reducing the cost of internet access, expanding access to rural New Yorkers, and increasing competition among service providers.
This week's victory is certainly cause for celebration, but there's still a long road ahead for this bill to become law. As CWA's Pete Sikora reports on the Albany Project blog:
Obviously, in addition to the Assembly, we need the Senate to move the bill and the Governor to sign it, so this is very much an uphill battle. But a really good day.
