Congressman asks Verizon: What?s happening to DSL, FiOS?

Is it true that Verizon plans to abandon DSL, forcing consumers to switch to more expensive wireless service? And what about FiOS?

Pittsburgh area Congressman Mike Doyle asked these and a few other pointed questions of Verizon President and CEO Lowell McAdam. In a letter dated May 8, 2012, the Communications and Technology Subcommittee member released a letter which asked, among other things:

*    Why Verizon denied lower-income areas of his district FiOS?
*    Will Verizon meet its FiOS build-out promises?
*    Does the company plan to continue to invest in and service DSL?
*    Why did Verizon renege on its policy of offering standalone DSL service?

And, Congressman Doyle asked about the timing of these apparently anti-consumer decisions. "Will Verizon," he wrote, "continue all previously planned FiOS deployment to markets  currently served by cable companies involved in the proposed joint marketing agreements?"

Speed Matters and CWA support Congressman Doyle's attempt to uncover Verizon's plans, in light of its secretive and anti-competitive proposed deal with Comcast and other cable companies. Verizon should let the public know what it is doing.
