Broadband Can Lead to Significant Boost in Business Earnings

Companies with broadband Internet access make nearly twice as much in annual revenues as those that don't, according to a new study.

The report analyzed Internet usage among tens of thousands of businesses in Iowa and found that the 72% with high-speed Internet have median annual revenues of about $600,000 — almost $300,000 more than rivals with slower connections or no connections at all.

Connect Iowa, the group leading the study, says the numbers are no accident and that there's a strong correlation between high-speed Internet use and companies' financial success.

Brian Mefford, CEO of Connected Nation, the parent of Connect Iowa, said the findings were indicative of larger trends:

"In the digital economy, businesses must embrace broadband, and other transformative technologies like it, in order to survive... The Internet is driving products and services to the marketplace in an environment where creativity and innovation are both reinforced and rewarded."

The study also found that broadband access can enhance quality of life and job creation. Costs of broadband are low, as well — the median monthly cost for Iowa businesses is only $62.

The Communications Workers of America strongly supports the creation and expansion of robust broadband networks for businesses across the country.
