$10 Billion could provide fiber to all all US Schools, hospitals
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation estimates that an investment of $10 billion could run fiber to nearly every community across the country.
The ambitious expansion of broadband infrastructure to over 123,000 "anchor institutions" - public schools, hospitals, community colleges, libraries - would also make it easier to provide Internet access to nearby homes and businesses:
A rural hospital, for instance, could stick a white spaces broadband antenna on its roof, link the antenna to its fiber connection, and suddenly bring at least basic wireless connectivity to the surrounding area at minimal cost.
The FCC is eager for public input on the Foundation's proposal and estimates. They will accept comments until October 28th.
