CWA supports new legislation to bring IT business to rural areas

Rural communities throughout the nation have been hit especially hard by the economic downturn. And one key to attracting new businesses and creating jobs is technology.

Congressman Zack Space (OH) and Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito (WV) have partnered to introduce the Rural Information Technology Investment Act, a piece of legislation that seeks to rebuild the economies of rural regions for the 21st century. And last week, CWA announced its support of the legislation.

"Information technology knows no boundaries and will greatly enhance the quality of life we are fortunate to enjoy," said Congressman Space. "This bill will lay the necessary framework to ensure that our region can compete in this new economy for years to come."

The legislation would work with the US. Department of Commerce to provide start-up grants for businesses, which establish IT centers in rural areas. The new IT centers would be eligible for grants up to $250,000 and priority will be given to businesses or organizations that collaborate with area colleges or universities.
