New Jersey tops residential broadband rankings in latest ITIF report

New Jersey has the best residential broadband adoption according to the Information Technology & Innovation Fund's (ITIF) 2008 State New Economy Index report.

ITIF - a Speed Matters partner - used a combination of Federal Communications Commission broadband subscription data and the results of the Communication Workers of America 2008 Report on Internet Speeds in all 50 States to come up with their results.

Following New Jersey were Rhode Island, Delaware, Massachusetts and Maryland to round out the top five states in the rankings. In comparison, Rhode Island ranked first in Speed Matters' own rankings and was followed by Delaware, New Jersey, Virginia and Massachusetts, with Maryland ranked 8th.

South Dakota saw the biggest improvement between its ranking in 2007 and 2008 in the ITIF report, moving up 16 spots from 50th to 34th place. Utah, Delaware, Nevada and Ohio were the other four states on ITIF's most improved list.

The report also found that states with high-tech sectors, high-incomes, and higher population densities tend to have the highest rate of broadband deployment.
