Taking Measure of the Problem
In addition to CWA President Larry Cohen's testimony before the House Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet, Free Press Policy Director Ben Scott also spoke in support of the draft of the Broadband Census of America Act.
This legislation would require the FCC to collect comprehensive data on nationwide high speed internet deployment, an essential task the FCC is currently failing to do.
"We cannot evaluate problems that we don't measure or study -- much less can we solve them," Scott said. "The bill under discussion would represent a leap forward in our knowledge about broadband markets and inevitably improve broadband policy."

Today's hearing comes at the filing deadline for an FCC Notice of Inquiry seeking input on the current state of high speed internet access across the country. In response, Free Press submitted to the FCC a thorough assessment of the woeful state of high speed internet access in the U.S.
