Activists deliver 650,000 petition signatures urging the FCC to deny the Sinclair-Tribune merger
Activists from a range of public interest and media justice groups delivered 650,000 petition signatures to the FCC. The petitions urge the Commission to deny the merger, which is currently under FCC review, because the post-merger Sinclair would be too large and too powerful. Activists from CWA, ACLU, Common Cause, Free Press Action, and other groups delivered the signatures to the FCC on the last day of the Sinclair-Tribune comment period.
Many of the activist groups, including CWA, filed formal comments at the FCC to stop the merger. CWA’s comments state that the potential Sinclair-Tribune merger would violate the congressionally mandated 39 percent national audience cap, reduce competition, harm localism, eliminate jobs, and diminish viewpoint diversity. CWA urged the Commission to deny the merger.
