COVID-19 accelerates cord-cutting in US

Over two million commercial and non-commercial customers cut the cord in the first quarter of 2020, compared to about one millioncustomers in the first quarter of 2019. COVID-19 has accelerated the already declining rate of cable and satellite TV subscribership, as customers switch from traditional pay-TV plans to Internet streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, and Disney+. The cord-cutting pace is expected to increase further in the second quarter of 2020, as the pandemic squeezes American pockets and US live sports remain at a standstill.
