AT&T to launch next-generation 5G in 2018

AT&T expects to launch its next-generation 5G mobile networks in dozens of markets by the end of 2018, the company said in a release. "5G will change the way we live, work and enjoy entertainment," said Melissa Arnoldi, president, AT&T Technology and Operations. "We're moving quickly to begin deploying mobile 5G this year and start unlocking the future of connectivity for consumers and businesses. With faster speeds and ultra-low latency, 5G will ultimately deliver and enhance experiences like virtual reality, future driverless cars, immersive 4K video and more."

Last year, AT&T announced that it would expand its fixed wireless 5G trials to Waco, Kalamazoo, and South Bend. Before that, the company announced 5G wireless trials in Austin, TX and Indianapolis, IN. The company claimed that the new wireless network will deliver peak speeds of 400 Mbps or higher and is the first stage of a larger network rollout, expected to cover 75 percent of the network by 2020.
