Verizon acquires fiber assets in Chicago

Verizon closed a deal to purchase WideOpenWest’s (WOW) fiber network assets in Chicago for $225 million. The deal was announced in this past August and secures WOW fiber to more than 500 macro-cell and more than 500 small-cell sites.

“The completion of this acquisition will help expedite our network densification with fiber and small cells, enhancing our industry-leading 4G LTE network and laying the groundwork for 5G," said Verizon’s chief engineer and head of wireless networks.

This agreement following the Verizon’s acquisition of XO Communications is the latest example of Verizon expanding its fiber holdings in preparation for next-generation wireless, which will require a dense deployment of small-cell facilities connected to fiber.
