DOJ staff unlikely to approve T-Mobile-Sprint merger
Career staff at the US Department of Justice are unlikely to approve a T-Mobile-Sprint deal, Reuters reports. The deal, which rumors suggest are in the final stages of negotiation, would combine the third- and fourth-largest mobile service providers and would require approval from the FCC and the DOJ.
Reuters reports that DOJ staff would be interested in maintaining competition in the US mobile sector, and would therefore deny the deal.
These reports are consistent with past DOJ concerns. Sprint has been interested in a T-Mobile merger for years, but earlier discussions never panned out after the FCC and DOJ made clear they would oppose any deal.
