New York State awards $212 million for broadband deployment
New York awarded almost $212 million in funding to 26 companies to bring broadband to unserved and underserved parts of the state. New NY Broadband is a state-administered program that combines state grants with private matches to encourage broadband deployment. Companies must build networks that support 100 Mbps speeds in all but the most rural areas, where the minimum target speed is 25 Mbps. Frontier Communications, one of the winning companies, was granted nearly $30 million dollars from the state of New York to complete 11 projects that cost a total of $37 million.
