T-Mobile owes customers $90 million for cramming charges
T-Mobile customers have until June 30th to apply for a refund for charges for unauthorized services. The company was “cramming” or charging customers for premium third-party messages that they didn’t agree to. In T-Mobile’s case, the carrier was hiding the charges in bills with vague language and taking a cut.
“T-Mobile charged customers knowing that it was receiving money, and in fact receiving a cut for third party charges that those consumers didn’t want, didn’t order, didn’t request, and didn’t consent to receive,”said Sen. Dick Blumenthal (D-Conn.). “Making no hint that it was for ‘ring tones,’ or ‘celebrity gossip,’ or ‘horoscope advice,’ but simply called ‘user charges.’”
Customers from the last five years are eligible for their share of a $90 million reimbursement, based on a settlement with the federal government.
