AT&T to launch 5G wireless in two cities, begin talks for Project AirGig wireless gigabit service

AT&T will launch trials for next generation 5G wireless in Austin, TX and Indianapolis, IN this year, according to the company. AT&T claims the new wireless network will deliver peak speeds of 400 Mbps or higher and is the first stage of a larger network rollout, expected to cover 75 percent of the network by 2020. This is AT&T’s first public-facing test for the next generation wireless network, which some providers and analysts claim has the potential to close the digital divide that remains in the United States.

AT&T also announced that it’s “in advanced discussions” with power companies over its “Project AirGig,” an initiative launched in September 2016 that is designed to move wireless, gigabit speed broadband “around” -- but not through -- power lines. The company says at least one trial location will be in the US, and, if it is successful, this will be another wireless broadband option in the fight to close the digital divide.
