AT&T reports its 5G wireless trials achieve gigabit speeds

AT&T reports that its 5G wireless trials are achieving speeds of more than one gigabit per second. Perhaps even more importantly, the company claims it is achieving these high speeds in some cases without a direct line-of-sight connection, which has been a challenge for the new wireless technology.

As the next generation wireless technology progresses, 5G devices are not yet ready or available for customers, and industry standards are still in development. AT&T aims "to be the first US carrier to launch standards-based, mobile 5G services to customers this year."

AT&T trailed its 5G technology with residential and business customers in South Bend, IN, where the company “provided gigabit wireless speeds on mmWave spectrum in both line-of-sight and some non-line-of-sight conditions,” the company said. AT&T also trials the technology in Kalamazoo, MI and Waco, TX. These trials are providing valuable lessons about the technology’s latency and ability in inclement weather.
