CWA joins the Alliance for Digital Equality
The Communications Workers of America announced a strategic partnership on Wednesday, November 19 with the Alliance for Digital Equality (ADE).
The ADE is a bipartisan consumer advocacy organization with the mission to facilitate and ensure 'equal access' to technology that seeks to empower all communities.
One of the ADE's main initiatives is the creation of Digital Empowerment Councils - leadership groups already formed in five cities. There are plans for the creation of 17 more in 2009 to help close the digital divide.
CWA has been working to spotlight the lack of high speed Internet access in rural communities that critically need it through its Speed Matters campaign. CWA president Larry Cohen commented on the natural partnership of CWA and ADE:
"Given that millions of Americans are still without high-speed Internet, our work to decrease the digital divide experienced in rural communities is a natural companion to The Alliance's focus on eliminating the same disadvantage in the nation's urban core."
ADE Chairman Julius H. Hollis praised the partnership with CWA:
"We're extremely encouraged by this opportunity to strengthen both our missions of advancing broadband deployment for underserved consumers in urban and rural communities across the nation. There are shared sensibilities between our groups that will clearly provide a leap forward in grassroots organizing and policy development in the markets we both serve."
