DirecTV Now reaches 1 million subscribers
DirecTV Now, AT&T’s new over-the-top service, surpassed the 1 million subscriber mark. AT&T bought DirecTV in July 2015 and launched DirecTV Now in November 2016. The OTT streaming service is AT&T’s attempt to attract cord-cutters and cord-nevers, who opt for streaming services like Netflix over traditional video subscriptions. With over 1 million subscribers after the first year, it seems to be working.
Almost half of TV viewership now goes to streaming video, according to a 2016 study. About 65 percent of OTT viewers watch a subscription service like Netflix, 30 percent watch a free service like YouTube, and five percent use a transaction service like iTunes. Netflix was by far the most popular streaming service with 70 percent of respondents watching.
