FCC votes to approve Verizon-Frontier merger

The FCC has approved Verizon’s $20 billion acquisition of Frontier Communications. The Frontier acquisition significantly impacts the wireline communications landscape for tens of millions of voice and broadband customers and will provide Verizon with 2.2 million fiber subscribers and a 25-million-premises reach across 31 states and Washington, DC.
“With the acquisition of Frontier by Verizon, workers at Frontier have a more stable outlook for their jobs after years of inadequate investment and mismanagement,” said CWA in a statement. “Verizon has committed to significant investment in fiber upgrades across the Frontier footprint.”
CWA had urged the FCC and state regulators to take a hard look at Verizon's proposed acquisition and negotiated significant improvements to increase technician numbers and invest in maintenance of the plant.
“While FCC Chair Carr sought to distract from substantive merger review by making Verizon's diversity, equity, and inclusion policies a rhetorical target, CWA members know that a union contract is always the strongest and most enforceable protection for workers,” said CWA. “CWA will continue to engage directly with Verizon to ensure workers' rights, dignity, and equality of opportunity are protected.”
