More than 1 million new broadband subscribers added in 2015

A Leichtman Research Group (LRG)study found that in the first quarter of 2015 the country’s largest cable and telephone companies gained almost 1.2 million new high-speed Internet subscribers. That brings the total broadband subscriptions to more than 88.5 million, “with top cable companies having about 53 million broadband subscribers, and top telephone companies having over 35.5 million subscribers.”

Comcast added 407,000 new subscribers at the end of 1Q 2015, while Time Warner added 328,000. Verizon added 41,000 new subscribers, and AT&T added 69,000 subscribers. In addition, the study noted: “AT&T and Verizon added 573,000 subscribers via U-verse and FiOS in 1Q 2015, while having a net loss of 463,000 DSL subscribers. U-verse and FiOS broadband subscribers now account for 54% of Telco broadband subscribers -- compared to 40% two years ago.”
