NJ regulators investigate Comcast HD surcharge
Regulators at the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) are investigating Comcast for an $9.95 HD charge the company added to bills in several markets. Comcast failed to include its “High Definition Technology Fee” in the promotion of its service or notify the BPU of the fee, which the company is required to do.
This isn’t the first time Comcast’s fees have drawn anger. Late last year the company imposed broadband usage caps and overage fees that prompted FCC complaints from its customers. “The steep cost of broadband services in the US is already a significant barrier to access for many,” Free Press policy director Matt Wood said at the time. “These punitive [caps and fees] create even more problems for cash-strapped Americans seeking to get online.”
