Obama Administration Launches Digital Literacy Portal
DigitalLiteracy.gov, a new digital training website launched earlier this week, offers workers a wealth of resources to help them improve their online and computer skills. As digital literacy becomes a prerequisite for many jobs, this website strives to prepare workers for the digital economy of the future.
According to a survey of the American workplace:
"Ninety-six percent of working Americans use new communications technologies as part of their daily life, while sixty-two percent of working Americans use the Internet as an integral part of their jobs."
The Digital Literacy portal exists to fill the gap between workplace demands and the online skills of average Americans — 28% of whom do not have any home Internet access. The website features easy-to-navigate materials covering everything from workforce development tutorials to games that teach digital skills. The website also offers lesson plans, making it easier for instructors to set up informal training sessions in libraries and community centers.
The website was created by the Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) in collaboration with the Department of Education and other federal agencies. CWA has long endorsed the creation of a Digital Literacy Corps and supports the NTIA's effort to bring digital literacy to Americans everywhere.
