Ohio set to see great benefit from increased broadband

Ohio is one of many states that is getting ready to tap into funding for broadband deployment in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

According to Tom Fritz of Connect Ohio, there are over 250 proposed broadband projects in Ohio that could launch in 6 months or less.

In a report aired on ABC Channel 6, Fritz notes that there are 350,000 people in Ohio, most of whom live in rural southeastern Ohio, without Internet access. This estimate is based on broadband mapping done by ConnectOhio for the Ohio Broadband Council.

The economic stimulus package includes $7.2 billion in funding for broadband projects to connect unserved areas, upgrade Internet service especially to community institutions, and increase broadband adoption. States and communities should begin working now with broadband providers to identify areas of need and effective strategies to address broadband gaps.
