Verizon to purchase fiber network infrastructure near Chicago
Verizon will purchase a fiber-optic network serving the Chicago area from WideOpenWest, the company announced. The $250 million purchase includes more than 500 macro-cell and more than 500 small-cell sites. It is expected to close early 2018.
“Following our recent agreements with Corning, Prysmian and Straight Path, today’s announcement is another example of Verizon’s commitment to invest in multi-use fiber to provide customers with next-generation broadband services, such as smart cities and 5G,” said Hans Vestberg, Verizon president of Network and Technology. “This acquisition will also help us create comprehensive digital solutions for small- and medium-business and enterprise customers.”
This agreement following the Verizon’s acquisition of XO Communications is the latest example of Verizon expanding its fiber holdings in preparation for next-generation wireless, which will require a dense deployment of small-cell facilities connected to fiber.
