In the United States we value fast cars, fast food and fast Internet. Well, two out of three isn?t bad. Speed Matters third annual study on Internet download speeds was released last week and the results are in: The United States made little progress since in the last year to improve the speed of our Internet connections. Many media outlets and bloggers cited the new report as evidence for the U.S. lagging behind other nations including: USA Today, CNET, the Chicago Sun Times, The Christian Science Monitor, LA Times, PC Magazine, Life Hacker and GigaOm.

Speakers at the FCC's August 26 Broadband and Job Training workshop concurred that high-speed broadband opens up tremendous opportunities for online learning and workforce development. Speakers cited a recent SRI International report that found that online education - properly structured - in many cases can be even more successful than classroom instruction.

Speed Matters New Broadband Study: US Still Lags Behind

Speed Matters released the third annual report on Internet Speeds in America - and U.S. connection speeds have not improved significantly in the past year. The results of the report are based on the last-mile connection speed of over 413,000 Internet users who took the online test between May 2008 and May 2009. The data also confirms that where a customer lives is a good indicator of Internet connection speed. With some exceptions, if you live in a Northeastern or Mid-Atlantic state, you are likely to have good high-speed Internet options.

USDA report shows that broadband improves rural economies

The US Department of Agriculture released a report that compared job growth in rural areas that adopted broadband at the start of the decade with areas that lack broadband. The conclusion: broadband helps communities and businesses create good-paying jobs. Yet, according to the USDA study, only 41 percent of rural households had broadband connections in 2008.

CWA supports new legislation to bring IT business to rural areas

Rural communities throughout the nation have been hit especially hard by the economic downturn. And one key to attracting new businesses and creating jobs is technology. Congressman Zack Space (OH) and Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito (WV) have partnered to introduce the Rural Information Technology Investment Act, a piece of legislation that seeks to rebuild the economies of rural regions for the 21st century. And last week, CWA announced its support of the legislation.
