The FCC hosts three workshops on broadband deployment and adoption

The FCC is continuing its series of workshops on the state of broadband deployment and adoption throughout the nation. During the first week of September, two workshops focused on state and local government broadband initiatives and recommendations for broadband benchmarks. Participants included officials from various state and local governments, representatives of several non-profit policy organizations, including Speed Matters' partners One Economy and the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), as well as academics and industry representatives.

Robots and broadband joining forces to create new possibilities in health care

The world of robots and artificial intelligence has largely lived in imaginations and on the silver screen. Today, an army hospital in San Antonio is applying these new technologies to change the way we provide health care. A medical robot is being used at Brooke Army Medical Center that gives doctors and patients a chance to communicate and allows doctors to give instructions to nurses or residents at bedside.

Western Massachusetts counting on broadband funds to stimulate economy

Western Massachusetts is hoping to be awarded $100 million during the first round broadband stimulus funds. A Boston Globe editorial called broadband access a "crucial component of economic development" in a region that has been passed over for public investment in the past. The Globe pointed out the ways in which high-speed Internet access could act as an economic booster shot.

Proposed Verizon-Frontier merger bad for consumers

Earlier this month, the Office of the Ohio Consumers' Counsel filed comments with the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio opposing Verizon's proposed sale of its rural access lines to Frontier Communications. Verizon is abandoning rural America and leaving a broad swath of destruction in its wake. Verizon sold its telephone lines in Hawaii. The result: consumers received terrible service quality and Hawaiian Telecom went bankrupt. Verizon sold its lines in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont to tiny FairPoint. The result: terrible service quality and FairPoint is nearly bankrupt. Verizon spun off Idearc - its Yellow Pages operation. The result: bankruptcy. The August 11th Wall Street Journal stated "In all, these companies have lost upward of $13 billion in value and counting." The Journal continued "...[Verizon's CEO] extracted prices that literally sucked the life out of the buyers."

FCC broadband workshop highlights energy and environmental benefits

On August 25, the FCC held a National Broadband Plan workshop focused on broadband and the potentially transformative role that communications infrastructure could play in meeting our national energy, environmental, and transportation goals. Eric Lightner, the Director of the Federal Smart Grid Task Force at the Department of Energy, defined the smart grid as "an enabling platform that integrates the latest digital and information technologies into the nation's electric delivery network for enhanced operational intelligence and connectivity throughout all application areas."
