WashTech/CWA President Testifies before Washington House on high speed Internet access benefits

On January 15th Marcus Courtney, the president of WashTech/CWA, testified in front of the Washington State House Technology Communications and Energy Committee on the need for and benefits of high speed Internet expansion. HB 2559, currently before the Washington State House, would create a statewide high speed Internet deployment and adoption initiative. During the hearing Mr. Courtney outlined some key CWA goals: fuel the state's economy, create jobs and keep Washington competitive, bridge the digital divide and create opportunity in rural and underserved communities, and improve health, safety and educational opportunities for Washington residents.

California invests $100 million for two years of high speed deployment

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has allocated $100 million over two years to the new California Advanced Services Fund (CASF), whose goal is to incentivize companies to expand high speed Internet service to un-served, under served, low income and rural areas of California. Companies who apply are required to match a minimum of 60 percent of the funds they are given.

Universities provide free access to online classes

Tens of millions of people are watching videos of professors, listening to MP3s of lectures and reading notes from classes held at top universities across the country -- for free. Schools, from Yale to Utah State University, are posting entire courses online for almost anyone to see. However, as the headline of the Washington Post article on this new trend states, "Internet Access Is Only Prerequisite For More and More College Classes" -- and with detailed video, long audio tracks and large files to be downloaded, the necessary high speed Internet access could be a prohibitive prerequisite.

Maine regulators approve revised Verizon-FairPoint deal

The Maine Public Utilities Commission has settled with FairPoint Communications on its attempt to purchase Verizon's Northern New England telephone lines. Despite this deal's attempts to resolve FairPoint's financial troubles, the end result would likely be counter-productive for Maine consumers.
