WA legislature unanimously passes high speed Internet access proposal

The Washington State legislature unanimously passed a bill to increase high speed Internet access across the state on March 12. The proposal -- a combination of bills sponsored by Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles, D-Seattle and Rep. Zack Hudgins, D-Tukwila -- will create a strategy to achieve high speed Internet access across the state, especially the underserved rural areas.

New legislation will create a Broadband Deployment Fund in West Virginia.

Thanks to new legislation proposed by Gov. Joe Manchin, West Virginia is one step closer to their goal of universal high speed Internet by 2010. The legislation, which was passed on Saturday, March 8th, will create a Broadband Deployment Fund and a Broadband Deployment Council in order to extend high speed Internet access to areas of West Virginia that are currently without it. CWA will be represented on the Broadband Deployment Council.

Last month, the Silicon Flatirons Center for Law at University of Colorado hosted a conference on the future of communications policy in the United States. The highlight of the event was FCC Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein's presentation, in which he called on the federal government to make universal high speed Internet service a national priority.

Larry Cohen's letter to the FCC on data collection Internet speeds

On February 29, 2008 CWA's president, Larry Cohen, wrote a letter to FCC Chairman Kevin Martin on the importance of improving data collection on upload and download speeds. As individuals and businesses more and more are relying on high speed Internet for audio and visual purposes, maintaining high upload and download speeds is vital. High speed Internet providers understand the importance of truly high speed networks such as AT&T's U-Verse and Verizon's FiOS, and so should the FCC.

Maryland house introduces Public-Private Deployment Initiative

House Bill 1144, introduced by Maryland State Delegates Thomas Hucker and Brian J. Feldman would establish a private-public partnership designed to make high speed Internet available universally in Maryland. The bill would model the partnership after the extremely successful Connect Kentucky initiative.
