High speeds could help American workers

Japanese engineers may soon have easy access to high speed Internet in speeds of up to 1.2 gigabits per second. That has Fred White of the ThomasNet Industrial Newsroom worried. Quoting our own Speed Matters report, he notes that even as of October 2006, the Japanese could have high speed Internet connections with 8.5 times the speed but at one-twelfth the cost.

West Virginia Internet access bill signed into law

Governor Joe Manchin signed West Virginia's Internet access bill into law on Thursday, April 10th. The legislation creates a broadband development council, provides for mapping high speed Internet services and establishes reporting requirements for state infrastructure, and requires any new service that relies on state money to be at least 600 kilobits per second - three times the FCC's definition of high speed.

High speed Internet key for rural entrepreneurship

Over at the Washington Post Small Business Blog, Sharon McLoone recently posted an interview with Deborah Markley, head of the Center for Rural Entrepreneurship. Markley discussed the importance of information technology -- like high speed Internet -- in fostering small business growth in rural America. For example, the Internet can overcome geography-related problems like a lack of networking opportunities; a small customer base; and isolation from services like banks, consultants, and venture capital firms.
